Express GO Train Update Spring 2026
Dear Neighbour,
Over the past few months, I’ve met with Metrolinx twice, in February and again in late April. We discussed Lakeshore East express train service in detail, the construction projects that are impacting the return to express train service, and to find solutions that would enable express service to return quicker. I appreciate their engagement over these last few months.
Here’s where things stand.
Good News on Birchmount Bridge Construction:
Metrolinx has adjusted its plans for the Birchmount Bridge construction so it will not delay the future return of express trains. This change came directly from the pressure we’ve been applying.
On Restoring Partial Express Service Now:
After my initial meeting with Metrolinx in February, I asked them to re-examine whether partial express service between Guildwood and Danforth could return sooner. Their operations team completed that review and here’s what they told us:
The current third track is too short to support scheduled full-service and express trains.
Right now, they run 6 trains every 10 minutes during peak periods, and those trains are already near capacity.
To introduce one express train each hour, they would need to reduce the overall number of trains from 6 trains to 5, which would mean fewer seats overall and more crowding on the trains.
As some of you have noticed during delays, Metrolinx changes regular stop trains to express. They do this so that trains can catch up to get back on schedule. Given how busy the corridor is with VIA Rail trains, the outdated signalling system that needs to be upgraded, and that service would be reduced, they have made the decision to not move forward with the trade-offs.
Long-Term Plan to Restore Express Service:
Metrolinx has committed to bringing back express service once the third track can come back on-line.
They are reviewing construction timelines and contracts before making a public commitment.
They hope to have a clearer timeline in the coming months and I will be meeting with them to discuss this.
Other Key Updates and Concerns:
Metrolinx will only be able to add more trains if they have the fleet available. They are currently refurbishing locomotive and cab cars.
Metrolinx is planning to install enhanced train control which is essentially an advanced signalling system that allows them to run more trains safely. These major upgrades are planned but are 4-5 years away. They have undertaken preparatory work including heavy construction work for signalling and their designs are under advanced stages.
I will be following up with the Minister of Transportation directly on these points as this work must be planned for in advance and I am concerned about the potential for delays.
Next Steps:
I’ve asked for another detailed briefing in the coming months, and I’ll continue pushing for a clear timeline and better service for Durham Region commuters.
This progress didn’t happen by accident. It happened because people spoke up and we kept the pressure on.
And we’re not stopping.
Sincerely,
Rob Cerjanec
Member of Provincial Parliament, Ajax

Thanks for the detailed update Rob. Honestly, it's refreshing to see a representative do the dirty work to fight for their constituents. Without these updates, all riders would still be in the dark given the nebulous nature of Metrolinx.
Thank you Rob for the update. The trains are getting so busy now that to get a seat requires you to be at the station early morning and for parking as well and at least 20 minutes before departure back to Oshawa. The trip from Toronto to Union is now two hours each way, total four hours a day. This means there is zero family life and personal balance. Your work-life balance is out the door when you spend one quarter of your waking day traveling to and from work. This takes a personal tole on yours and your families mental health. The govt toots its horn about the role of mothers in the home and at work but when you speak of the lack balance offered, there’s nothing but delays in getting the express trains back. Please keep spreading and speaking for the lost voices of those that travel daily for work and leave families behind to do so.
